George Pyner

I believe that George is probably related to my family but have so far been unable to find the link, if it exists.

I. George (Henry) Pyner, b. 1845-1858 in Monmouth, (son of George Pyner, smith)

Census 1881 living at Dorchester House, London. Occupation Stable Helper. Born Monmouth. Age 36 (1845). Part of the household of Robert S Kilford and 6 of his family. One other Stable Helper was George Rully, age 24, also from Monmouth. In all there were 37 servants and 2 wives of servants in the household.

Census 1891 living at 68 Dock St, St Woollos, nr Newport, Monmouthshire. Occupation Stud Groom. Age 40 (1851), born in Monmouth, Mon. Head of Household.

Census 1901 boarding at 5 Station Road, Gloucester. Occupation Bus Driver, age 43 (1858). Born in Monmouth, Mon and married. Also at the same address are David Haviland, age 39 (1862), Bus Driver, born Gloucestershire Tibberton; his wife May, age 53, born in Midhurst in Sussex. Also boarders Hugh Anderson, age 48, living on own means, born Surrey Wandsworth; and George C Morgan, age 31, Bus Driver, born Gloucestershire Yorkley.

He died on 20 Apr 1910 in Weirhead Cottages, Monmouth. Age 60 (1850), occupation Coachman (Omnibus). Cause of death Aortic Aneurysm and Exhaustion, certified by P G Harve, MD. The death was registered by Charles Pyner, son, of 6 Green View, New Inn, Pontypool on 21 April 1910.

George married Sarah Watson on 12 May 1872 in Monmouth in the Independent Chapel, Monmouth by License. Officiating were Walter? Meaton?, Minister, and William A Parsons? Both George and Sarah were of full age, resident in Monmouth and unmarried, George was an Ostler and the fathers were George Pyner, smith and John Watson, Officer of Coast Guard. The marriage was witnessed by George Richards and Eliza Morgan and both men signed their names but the women made their mark.

They had a son Charles but he was not living with them when any of the censuses were taken.

Sarah was born between 1844 and 1849 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, (daughter of John Watson), or in 1841 in Tarbert, County Clare in Ireland.  (Tarbert is actually in County Kerry on the other side of the Shannon.)

Census 1871 living at the Beaufort Arms Hotel, Agincourt Square, Monmouth. Occupation Chambermaid, age 26 (1845), born in Portsmouth. She was one of 9 servants and the hotel manager was William Moore, age 34, from Skeyton, Norfolk. William's wife was Susannah E, age 27, from N America, Picton, Canada and they had a 6 year old daughter Ida who was born in Diss, Norfolk. William Pyner's second wife Mary Roberts worked next door in the Kings Head Hotel which was also run by someone from Norfolk.

Census 1901 living at Monmouth, Monmouthshire. No occupation. Age 49 (1842), born in Portsmouth. Head of Household and married.

Census 1911 in Glendower Street, Monmouth working as a charwoman aged 70 (1841).  She claimed to have had 3 children, only one of whom was still living.  Her daughter Teresa died in 1873 about 3 weeks after birth, her son Charles lived until 1961 but the other child cannot be identified, so could have been a stillbirth.

She died 13 Jan 1925 in Monmouth at 1 Almshouse Street, Monmouth aged 76 (1849). Widow of George Pyner, Coachman. Cause of death 1) Chronic Bronchitis, 3 years; 2) Anasarca, (this is a diffused dropsy of the skin & tissue). Death certified by W H Williams, MRCS and registered by Chas Pyner, son, of 21 Cadogan Terrace Cadoxton, Neath on 15th January.

A. Charles Pyner, possibly born 4Q 1880 in London.

In 1901 he was living in Resolfen, Glamorgan and working as a railway signalman.

Resided 21 Apr 1910 in 6 Green View, New Inn, Pontypool.
Resided 13 Jan 1925 in 21 Cadogan Terrace, Cadoxton, Neath.

He married Gertrude Madeline Evans, daughter of Richard Evans, in July 1904, in the parish church at Llangatwg, Cadoxton-juxta-Neath. Both Charles and Gertrude were aged 23 at the time of the marriage.

They had three children, Gertrude who was born and died in 1905, Arthur George born in 1906, and Hubert R who was born in 1912. Arthur married Frances M Morris in 1945 and died in 1978, four years before his wife. Hubert married in 1936 and, I believe, he and his wife had one child who died shortly after birth.
